Obesity is associated with multiple co-morbidities, including diabetes mellitus, hypertension, hypercholesterolemia, obstructive sleep apnea, osteoarthritis, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), asthma, and depression. These comorbidities are responsible for more than 2.5 million deaths per year worldwide. Surgical weight loss has been shown to improve if not resolve many of these co morbidities.
